Maoist leader Ranjan Munda arrested in West Bengal

JHARGRAM (West Bengal): Top Maoist leader Ranjan Munda, who carried out subversive activities in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa, and a squad leader were arrested by the joint forces of West Midnapore district today, said police.

Munda, involved in the abduction of Sankrail Police Station Officer in Charge Atindranathnath Dutta in October 2009 in the district and the killings in Nayagram, was surrounded by the joint forces in a wooded area in Chunghati, about 8 km from the border Odisha, at 2:30 pm, they said.


 Munda, a squad leader Nayagram-Gopiballavpur and Jayanta, squad leader of Jhargram, offered no resistance when arrested, they said, adding some of the Maoists who had fled there.

An AK-47, INSAS rifle, a pistol and cartridges were seized 150 of them. The arrest came close on the heels of another top Maoist leader Vikram alias Arnab prey to the railway station in Purulia district Biramdih last month.

The Maoist leader Kishenji was killed in a clash with the joint forces in the jungle Burisole also in the district on November 24 last year.
