Cabinet approves Rs 14,000 crores for 2G spectrum

NEW DELHI: The cabinet on Friday set the base price for auction of radio waves from second generation to 140 billion (14k crore) rupees five units of radio waves across India's 22 telecommunications zones said a minister who requested anonymity.

The country is selling 2G radio waves for the first time through an open auction, after the Supreme Court said a 2008 grant process was flawed and ordered all the 122 permits issued in that zone year to be revoked in September.


A ministerial panel had recommended the creation of the auction starting price, either at 140 billion rupees or 150 million rupees for 5 Mega Hertz of All India radio waves, after the regulator proposed price of 181.1 million sector Rs was seen as too high and drew howls of protest from the industry.


The price is for radio waves in the 1800 MHz band, where GSM-based mobile operators operate.

For radio waves in the 800 MHz band, which is currently used by CDMA technology companies based in India as the unit of Russian conglomerate system (SSAq.L), the cabinet pricing starting at 1 3 times the 1800 MHz band
