Sub-inspector tried to rape a dalit woman inside the police station


Lucknow: Taking suomoto cognizance of the "horrendous act of a sub-inspector of police who tried to rape a Dalit woman inside the police station" in the state capital, Lucknow Bank Allahabad High Court on Wednesday cited director general of police (DGP), Uttar Pradesh (UP), issued a statement to show cause to the state government as to why not an "exemplary damages" are awarded to the victim for the heinous act of the police.

A division bench of Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice Saeed-uz-Siddiqi Zaman took suo moto cognizance of the case and asked the DGP to appear in person before the court. The case was registered as a public interest litigation (PIL) and UP government, through its principal home secretary, was made a respondent. The DGP AC Sharma and Inspector General (IG) of Police and Superintendent of Police, Lucknow, Ashutosh Pandey appeared in court, described the act of the police sub inspector Prasad Awasthi Kanmta published in the station Maal as "horrendous". Awasthi was captured by the locals when a Dalit woman called the police station under the pretext of resolving a dispute he had with his neighbor and attempted rape. 

The DGP and the IG requested the grant of two weeks to file counter affidavit, when the court asked to find a permanent solution to these problems by bringing appropriate changes in the Police Manual and other laws and regulations govern the affairs of service police personnel so that only police officers who have outstanding records and are known to occur ads cultivated available in police stations. The police informed the court that the matter has been taken seriously by the administration of the police and government. In addition to ordering an investigation into the incident, police sergeant accused has been arrested and action was also brought against other officers tried to hush up the case, told the court.

On Wednesday, the sergeant called Kamta Prasad Awasthi women in their facilities within the police station under the pretext of resolving a dispute with their neighbors for nine months. However, she raised an alarm when Awasthi was a violation. The locals ran to his rescue. The woman was saved, but senior police officers allegedly began to pressure her for not filing a complaint against Awasthi. However, when villagers protested, the police filed a case but not arrest the accused. On Thursday, when the matter was highlighted by the media, Awasthi was arrested and ordered the investigation.
