The group became the 47th organization to be banned in the UK. India has banned the IM in June 2010 with the U.S. and New Zealand following suit shortly.

"Making the membership and support of the organization (MI) (be) a crime," said British Home Secretary, Theresa May.

She said the IM is a terrorist organization that has conducted a series of indiscriminate mass casualties. "They used violence to achieve their stated goals of establishing an Islamic state in India and the application of Islamic law."

May proscribe the group said it sent a clear message that the United Kingdom condemns their activities and demonstrates its commitment to combating terrorism to international partners. Previously, British MPs voted unanimously to ban the group on Wednesday.

"(The IM) has frequently perpetrated attacks against civilian targets ... with the intention of maximizing the victims,'' said Interior Minister James Brokenshire the House of Commons on Wednesday. He cited the participation of the group in May 2008 , the blasts in Jaipur that killed 63 people and set in an explosion outside the Delhi High court in September last year. Brokenshire said the group had threatened British tourists in India.

"We believe there is ample evidence that IM refers to terrorism and I think it just added to the organization to the list of proscribed organizations." Brokenshire said the decision was made after a thorough review of all information and evidence available on the group.

Indian origin MP Keith Vaz welcomed the measure. "The international community must unite in the criminalization of this organization, which has killed innocent civilians and indiscriminate use of violence.''

Shadow Home Secretary echoed Diana Johnson Vaz, saying that the IM was behind "some of the most heinous acts of terrorism in recent years." British authorities believe that the IM was involved in the attacks of 26/11.
