108 emergency service saved 908 babies in 1st year

CHENNAI: The neonatal team dedicated emergency service 108 has in its first year saved 908 babies less than a month in the city and nearby towns.

Tamil Nadu has an infant mortality rate (IMR), at 24 deaths per 1,000 live births than the national average of 47 years. The Tamil Nadu government, which intends to reduce the number to less than 15 per 1,000 in 2017, was funded last year four ambulances equipped especially for infants under one month old. The ambulances were operated by GVK-EMRI hospitals, which is the service 108,

The results showed almost immediately. Of the 1,088 ambulance calls attended, about 92% of the children involved were in critical condition but survived more than 83% of babies.

"We have four ambulances in the city and each serves an average of three cases in two days," said GVK-EMRI regional manager of B Prabhudoss TOI.

The government now plans to purchase 35 ambulances for use rate statewide. Some of the equipment in an ambulance are neonatal incubators, pulsoxymeters, ventilators, suction devices and syringe pumps. "The ambulances from other districts will be launched in two months. Vellore and Dharmapuri districts will be the first to achieve them, and most in need," said the 108 service operations chief BN Sridharan.
